OpenVPN registry error on computer startup

I use a VPN service, with OpenVPN installed, and for the past 10 days or so a registry error box has been showing on computer startup. See the screenshot below. Otherwise, the service is working fine. The VPN service's techs (Private Internet Access) suggested a few possible fixes - running as admin, reinstalling, checking exclusions on security software - but none have stopped it. Neither did a system restore at the time. I did a complete uninstall with Revo Pro (medium setting) and then reinstalled, a few reboots in there, but that didn't fix it either. So we all are at a loss. Any suggestions? Win 8.1 Pro x64. Thanks,

When you install it do you have to option to install for all users or current user? If you have tried either option & this did not help, then I would suggest removing the application, creating a new user then installing it " fresh" while logged in as the new user.

No, there isn't that choice. Do you mean a new Windows user? Doing that doesn't come free!

Sorry If I was not clear, I suggest going to control panel - user accounts - manage another account- create new account, then use it for testing

Been dealing with other matters and haven't gotten around to this yet. Before I do, there is another odd problem: jv16 Power Tools, which I use about once a month, has a key file, recognition.dll, which every reboot of Windows 8.1 deletes (after I've reinstalled or copied it back in). I've never heard of such a thing, and don't have any clue why, but I've definitely isolated it to the reboot process itself. Perhaps I should try the same thing with that program too?

Hi

You need to right-click open VPN GUI and run as administrator.

this will run with sufficient permissions to create the registry keys in question

You probably missed in the original post I mention "running as admin." My VPN service is started manually, so I wouldn't see why changing admin rights would affect the registry at computer startup.

Some programs don't run properly even when launched using an administrator account. They require specifically choosing to run as administrator by right-clicking as ConradGoodman suggested.

Fair enough. Manually running as admin, making a connection, disconnecting awhile later and then rebooting returns the same error box.
