OpenSUSE 10 very choppy

I am running openSUS 10 on my ecs mobo and it is very very choppy, here are the specs of the comp

ECS k7som mobo
AMD duron 1800
Geforce MX 4000 128mb PCI vid card
WD 30gb hard drive
128mb or 256 mb ram, cant remember which stick is in there

Now my only thought is the ram, but would 128mb of ram make a HUGE difference.

I mean this thing is VERY choppy, i cant do anything with this machine, it takes at least 8 minutes to boot up, and if i try to open up firefox, that takes another 30-40 seconds.

it is a brand new install too. I have the OS installed on a partition formatted with reiserfs, could that be it? Sorry i am very new to linux and just want this thing to run well

If you haven't already, do an online update through Yast and install the Nvidia patch for your video card. While in Yast look under hardware and make sure DMA is enabled for your HD.

128 megs is not enough if you are running Gnome or KDE. 256 would be better but you would have a smoother experience with 512.

OpenSuse 10 is a very bulky default install. Update all your stuff then look to find XFCE Window Manager and install that and select that as your default GUI. Your PC will love you.

Get more ram.
Check DMA for the hard drive.
Check the logs for anything out of the ordinary.
Avoid binary drivers.
Make sure not too much is starting up with the system.
