OpenOffice or Microsoft Office?

I'm trying to decide on a word processing and office suite for my new system build and I'm debating between OpenOffice and actually spending money on Microsoft Office. Which way would you recommend? I've been using Office 2003 for ages now and I've become very used to it but I hear very good things about OpenOffice. Could someone give me their take on this? Also, what office suite programs do you use?

What are your office needs?

If you are a professional or have your own business, you should use MS Office so you can play nice with others. If you're a student, you can probably get away with OpenOffice.

I use both, but ultimately I have to have MS Office. I'd love to see the ODF format take off, but it hasn't yet.

If you already own Office 2003, use Office 2003. OO is good software to install anyway since it can convert word documents to pdf files, but overall MS Office is a much higher quality product.

Yeah, I use office suite software for school work mostly. I only really utilize the basic functions of MS Word and Excel and I rarely ever use Powerpoint these days. I have Office 2003 installed on my laptop but I don't have the installation discs to install on my new desktop.

Are you a student? If so, check out the MSDNAA Page. Through my university, I am able to get many Microsoft programs for free or almost free, it could be the case at yours.

If you are not eligible for the MSDNAA program at your university (or the program does not offer Office), checkout Microsoft's Office 2007 Ultimate for $60 for students offer.

Are you employed? Check with Microsoft or your employer about the Microsoft WAH (work at home) / home use program. A relative of mine was able to get Office 2007 (Enterprise) for about $20 through it.

You can easily add this functionality to office with the freeware, open source, PDFCreator.

I use OpenOffice and highly suggest it. I've never had any formatting issues with Writer/Word files but I don't do any fancy formatting, just heading styles and text styles really. I have had formatting issues between Calc/Excel in regards to borders, but they were very minor.

If you want to share your document with others, you should export to a pdf anyway, unless they have a need to edit the document.

Personally I don't care much for OO. It's a great product if you don't want to spend the money, but Office 2007 is a great innovation. Also I am a student, so price isn't nearly as big of an obstacle to overcome.

I'm in college, and I use google docs. Granted, I don't do anything complicated, but its good enough for me 😛.

I can't live without Word / Outlook. Office 07 is tight. It's worth it. And a lot of people don't realize that a Professional license entitles you to 2 installed machines. Hello desktop / laptop! 😀 Many people can get by with student/teacher edition, too, as well as more machines in the license.

I switched to OO a few years ago and I've never had any compatibility issues to or from other people using MS Office.

I'm using both OOo and MS Office because my laptop's HDD died and I don't have my Office CD to reinstall with me at Duke. OOo takes some getting used to, but I haven't had any major problems with it. That being said, I still prefer Office 2003, but mostly because I'm used to it.

hey,
well i now use openoffice, cuz its free, its ok. does everything for me, though i'd probably prefer office 2007 but that aint free 🙁
and as others stated it needs a little getting used but it works for basic stuff.

i thought that if you're a college student, you can get office 2007 ultimate for under 60 bucks or something.........there was some website i saw.

I've been using OpenOffice for almost 3 years now.

It's not nearly as polished as MSOffice, specially 2007 which I think is great, but you can't beat free as in free beer. 🙂

I'm downloading Lotus Symphony as I type this; I've heard good things about it.

Ah, I guess that's right then 😀

No, he is the richest in the USA. There are many more throughout the world vastly richer. Oil 'sheiks' in in Saudi, or other nearby counties can buy Bill Gates wealth and Microsoft at least 50 times over and still ask for seconds.
AOL/Time Warner, while not entirely USA based is bigger then microsoft. Sony, BMG or other record companies. Do not be fooled, not every person/company publishes their worth. But rest assured, everyone needs petro, not everyone needs microsoft.

The Ultimate steal

Just got it installed last night. It's worth every penny, for Vista integration if nothing else.
Best $59 I've ever spent! :Q
