In Writer dont you go to Insert>Picture>From File? Or are you talking about something else? I too am new to OO2.

If you use Draw you can change the properties of text which gives you the options of emboss, shadow, etc.

Basically, WordArt in MSWord was this feature that basically created text with nice colours and designs, used for like a title or something.

In OO2, I can't find a similar option.

In Draw there is Fontwork.
