Opening word documents via symlinks

I'm on Windows 7 x64 and I'm trying to open some .doc files located on my network using Word 2010. If I navigate to the networked location via mapped network drive or direct path, it opens normally. However, when I use a symlink to the networked folder and try to open the doc, it is much slower. It feels like it took minutes to open, rather than seconds. Any idea why this is happening?
