Opening Up a Port help.

Hello, I currently have a home network set up, that links 3 computers to the internet through a linux red hat server. However i am finding that some internet applications or games are being delayed of restricted because of the firewalls port restrictions. for instance in most games i can never "create a game", becuase when i do no one will join because they can't bypass the firewall i have.
I am curious if i could possiblyfix this problem.
