Hi,

I'm having a problem with IE 5.5 on win2K professional. When I'm in a website and choose to open a link in a new window (right click, "open in new window"), the frame of the new window opens and then everything freezes for a few seconds until the contents of the new window starts to appear. It's almost as if this uses the same thread as some main thread in the OS.

The thing is, this only recently started happening and before then it worked perfectly. I have plenty free disk space, have done a complete clean up of programs, cleaned the registry and done a defrag, but nothing seems to help.

The configuration is quite fast too:

AMS T-Bird 1.33
40 GB IBM 7200 HD
256 MB Mushkin RAM
32 MB Asus Geoforce Graphics card.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Try this:

Close down all IE windows open. Then open Task Manager and see if there are any processes not applications running called iexplorer.exe. If you find any, right-click on them and select End Process Tree until they are all gone.

Thanks for the tip. I tried it and actually found that even after closing IE, the process iexplorer.exe was in fact still running so I ended the process but the problem is still there.

Do you know what else could be causing this?

Also, howcome the iexplorer.exe process is running even when IE is not?

Any ideas????

Hmmm...you could try running a repair on IE, letting it refresh the files. You don't have any of those little freeware apps running do you?

actually, there are some ad programs running but they're not open at this time. I have to have them installed in order for some other shareware apps that I run. I don't think they'll interfere as these shareware apps aren't open when this problem occurs.

By the way, will it help to upgrade to IE6? I heard that IE6 can be really limiting with all the security on win2K, is this true?

Thanks again for your answers... please let me know if you have any more ideas.
