Opening documents in MS Office XP

If I attempt to open a .doc file (for example) from a folder when Word is not currently open, Word opens a new file, not the document I selected. To open the document, I must have Word open and then open the file from the File menu. I assume there is some option somewhere that opens a new document everytime Word is opened, but I have yet to find it. I checked, and there are no macros or switches being used when WINWORD.EXE opens. Has anybody else run into this problem? This same problem seems to occur in PowerPoint and Excel as well.
