I have a GF2 GTS and many games offer me the option of playing using DirectX or OpenGL. What's better for me? What's good and bad about each system?

It's going to vary from game to game, depending on how much effort the developer put into each renderer. Nowadays, neither api is inherently any faster or more featureful than the other. OpenGL used to destroy D3D in terms of both speed and features, but that was a long time ago. If you post specific games, people can give you advice.

most games i play ill use directx. but half-life/counter-strike doesnt like directx for some reason.. when i try to exit to the menu, i get a blank screen.. i believe that's a problem alot of people have.. so i run in opengl which looks nice and everything.. mostly no difference, just a preference..

The game I'm playing the most right now is IL-2 Sturmovik, a WWII flight sim (pretty good one, btw).

If you're unsure the best option is to simply try both and see how they go.
