OpenGL dosn't work in GF4 Ti4200

I just got a Gainward Geforce4 Ti 4200 and installed it last night. I am unable to play any OpenGL games at all. JK2 & MoH all exit with the following error message, GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem. I've installed the lasted drivers from nVidias web site. I suspect that their may be a registry problem and that the OpenGL ICD is not loading nvOpenGl.dll but I am not sure.

Direct3d games are fine and don't suffer any problems. If anyone has any tips short of reformatting/installing on how to fix this I would appreciate it. Thank you.

;) What card did you have in before hand? Have you set anything specific in OpenGL (ie forcing AA/Aniso etc)? I'd say it is most likely to be a driver/reg prob due to left over garbage from previous drivers ... something becoming very common in ATI and nVidia cards ... I think they are tweaking their drivers for perf and forget compatabilities and the various knock on effects. If you run Win9x Detonator Destroyer will remove all traces of previous nVidia drivers while there is also a process to removing ATI drivers too. Simply uninstalling from the Control Panel is rarely enough. I had to do a fresh install which wasn't bad for me as I wanted set up a dual boot anyway.

My previous card was a ATI Radeon 32MB DDR. I've not had a nVidia card before so I don't think the destroyer will do anything. I am using Win98 though.

Thanks.

;) Did you try to remove all traces of the Radeon before installing the GF4? It's also wise to use the latest mobo drivers if not BIOS too. It is also best to set the gfx driver to 'standard VGA' and then install the driver. Other things to try are diff driver versions (manu and nVidia) and be sure to reinstall DX8.1 after each time you switch drivers. Here's a guide to fully removing Radeon drivers in Win2000/XP but be about the same:

I thought that I removed all traces. When I get home I'll go through that link, thanks. I had the driver set to standard vga prior to install and afterward installed the latest via 4-in-1 drivers. If nothing works, I feel a re-install coming on.

This error message usually occurs when you are using the Microsoft video drivers that are installed when windows automatically detects your card. They support DirectX but do NOT support OpenGL. One more example of MS trying to kill competing technology.

So I'm guessing the windows drivers are still there for some reason. I would try installing the drivers that came on the CD from Gainward, then if that works, go get the latest Detonators from Nvidia. Hope this helps.

The same thing happened to me with my ASUS A7V mobo. I got the mobo used and I know it already had a defective memory slot. My buddy and I tried to get the card to work with openGL for 2 weeks and couldn't, so I returned it. I run a two monitor setup and we tried everything. I removed everything, reinstalled all comonents in different slots, flashed the BIOS, got the proper drivers for the card and the via 4-in-1. NOTHING worked. We just assumed that my mobo wasn't compatible. In my case it isn't a big deal because I plan on getting a new mobo/cpu soon and will probably get the 9700pro.

Speaking of OpenGL... I thought there was a newer ver of it coming out a year ago... If so how would it be compared to directx 9.0 and when will newer games use this api?
