A friend has a problem. Recently tried to copy or download an article from the net. Got the window that says "open with" and then chose "WORD". When it opened there was no intelligable text; just heiroglyphics! Now everything that needs to be opened defaults to "WORD" and comes out with more heiroglyphs.... How can he clean this up and get the window back that offers other choices? He is using XP Home. Maybe System Restore ??

He may be able to fix it with making a shortcut and right clicking the choose properties. He probably needs to choose IE to open it with.

he could right click the file, select open with, find the program that opens that file, then click the 'always open with' at the bottom. then any file with the same extension will be opened with that program.

Open the Control Panel and go to Tools->Folder Options. One of the tabs is File Types. Scroll through the list and find the extensions that open with the wrong application and hit Change. Select the right application and you are done.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will pass these along and maybe even try them myself. If the thread stays up long enough; I'll let you know what worked.

Have you tried holding down <Shift> then right-clicking?
Seems the checkbox that says something like "always use the program" must have been checked when he used <Open With> before.
