Open Wireless Network

I think my neighbor just got a wireless router but he left all the default settings on and i was able to connect to his connection from my house.

Should i tell him or should keep it to myself he he :evil:

Do you live somewhere that hackers run rampant? If not, then don't worry about it. No big deal if he turns his computer off when he's not using it. Maybe he's just baiting you and is tracking your venry movement and hacking you back as you use his free Internet. heh.

I connected last night but i didnt see if he had any shared items, i'm sure his computer is set to the default windows xp settings.

I will take a look around tonight.

Naw it's outside the city quiet town. Its the first time someone in my block has a wireless network besides me.

on another note : how much protection do you think you need? I think almost any wep protection is fine, but one of my roommates insists on only allowing permitted mac addresses + 128 bit encryption + resetting the wep ever couple weeks or so.

kinda glad i just ran a 100ft cable from the router to my computer and gave up that wireless mess 😛

I only have WEP at 128 encryption. I should do MAC address filtering since its only one machine. I tried to disable SSID but that didnt work.

WEP is a f*cking JOKE. Unless you've determined that you can't get signal outside your property, and you can easily see anyone parked in front trying to "haX0r1z3 j0o", don't rely on it to protect you. 😛

WPA-PSK with a strong passphrase or death.

Most have remote admin disabled automatically to prevent this.

Same here. My 802.11b card on my laptop doesn't do anything but WEP. I really should MAC filter, but that doesn't realy keep you safe from packet sniffing. 🙁
