Open vs. Shared Network Authentication

I have a questions regarding wirless network authentication. I am using windows to configure my wireless network settings, and under Wireless Network Key, there are options for Open, Shared, WPA, WPA-SPK network authentication. Which one is the best? I haven't tried the WPA, but both Open and Shared authentication works. Which one should I use??

Also, what is the Key index under Network Key? it is currently set to 1. I think it lets me increase it upto 4. Is higher key better?

Thanks you!

Open WPA-SPK is the most secure.

Make sure that WPA-SPK is supported by your Wireless Hardware and that you have WinXP sp2 (or at least sp1).
