Open source software for e-file?

I'm looking for open source software for e-filing federal taxes.

Once again the IRS has plastered the tax booklets with pleas for folks to e-file and once again the only ways to do so are to buy software, hire a tax preparer, or turnover all our personal info to a third party website. The state instruction book is even worse with a "tip" after every line explaining how all this would be easier, quicker with "free" e-file.
 
Ummm....efile is free, atleast for MA. MA has been using the free software for federal and state for about 6 years.

Federal efile isn't free for everybody. MA may have it's own software but not here.

Looking at the MA website, here is what it says about efile:

Commercial Software and Service Providers

Massachusetts taxpayers have the option to prepare and file their tax returns online using independent software and service providers. Online Filing providers may allow users to file all related Massachusetts tax schedules as well as federal tax forms. These providers also may offer tax return preparation assistance. Please note that Online Filing providers may charge a fee for their service. The Department of Revenue does not recommend any one service provider over another nor are these providers affiliated with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The Department of Revenue offers these links as a service to our taxpayers and all technical support issues must be addressed directly with the provider you select.

If the states and the feds really want folks to efile they would quit dinking around and make it available directly instead of lying about free filing when it isn't free.
 
E-file requires verification of software by the filer with the Feds.

If it was open source, then all sorts of bugs could be injected.

Some Web sites have free filing.

Pay attention to the tax thread after mid January.
