im using embarq and a 660 series modem. i basically am trying to get the ports open so i can actually download torrents. i have had great success behind cable modem but this modem seems to be blocking the ports. i telnet'd into it and tried to add ports in the NAT for my computer and still can't get ports open to even get the download to start. any ideas/

quick question, the modem is set at 192.168.2.1 and technically to the modem the router ip is 192.168.2.2

however, to log into the modem its address is 192.168.1.1

if i want to open/forward all ports to the router which address should i use? after that the port forwarding in the router should take care of the rest (assuming i disabled the firewall in modem etc...)

You are using another router behind this modem? This modem also seems to have built in router functions as well, and you may be dual NAT'ing.
If you are.. What kind of router are you using?

Glad to see its working.
But if you continue to have issues, i think you should turn the DHCP off of your netgear and use it basically as an access point/switch to avoid the headaches that can come with dual NAT'ing.

my ports still aren't open though. i took your advice and turned off dhcp on the router to see if i could host games now...currently i have the firewall turned off on the modem and forwarded the ports through modem to my computer which has static ip address. when i try to log into the modem through browser it says: "This object on the EQ-660R is protected" anyway around this? i can telnet into the modem just fine but would prefer the browser.

other than that, are there any other things i need to change in the modem? bridge mode perhaps?

EDIT* ok apparently that worked i can now host games. i currently have all ports opened to my machine...i think ill prolly change that and be more selective but i had to make sure.

EDIT** canyouseeme.org verified that the port for my torrents is now open and my download speed just went up quite a bit...still not great but i don't think there are very many seeders for what i am downloading.

one more quick question, do you use newsgroups? is it worth to pay a monthly fee for the downloads?

I am just going to quote my other post on another thread:

"I hope you got your issue solved but if you are still having problems, it is likely that you need to double port forward.

If you have a modem with no wireless capability and a router with a wireless capability, you need to hard-wire to your modem and use its web-interface to forward ports to your router's IP address assigned by the modem. Then you need to disable the firewall of your wireless router and forward those ports from your router to your PC's IP (assigned by the router). As I said, you can just turn off your router's firewall as your modem already has one built-in.
"

And yes, newsgroups are well worth the price if you know how to use them. I use Easynews.
