Open Office 1.1 vs Office 97

Those are my options without spending money. Anyone had any success with OO in regards to stability and cross-platform use? I'm not opposed to using Office 97 but if I can get an "up-to-date" solution that works and is free I'll use OO.

open office works perfectly for me, cheap, wasy to use, stable, and works very well across platforms (i use it in linux and windows)

Hey, that's it, 'nough said. Some things don't translate very well between open office and ms word, but, other than that, it works just fine for me too. In both windows and linux.

FWIW, I use Office 97 under WinXP Pro here at home, but I have no need to be compatible with more recent versions of Office. Also, check out the newsgroup alt.comp.freeware for discussion of freeware office suites.

If 100% compatiblity is a need (like in workplace), then I'd use Office 97. Otherwise, you should have no trouble OO and Office compatibility, and OO is more up to date.
