(this is a moderator post)

Hello P&N community :)

In recognition of this being a USA presidential election year (and in anticipation of the community growing as we progress towards Nov 6th) your moderation staff wants to do a gut check with the P&N community to get a read on your current likes and dislikes about this specific subforum - the way the community interacts with itself, the level of active moderation, what should be allowed, what shouldn't, etc.

So please take advantage of this thread by posting up what you like and dislike about the P&N. Too many personal attacks that go unsanctioned? Too much over-moderation of thread-craps?

Ground rules for this thread - please keep your feedback and dialogue productive, this is not a "bash on the mods" thread, and it is not a "bash on member XYZ" thread.

However it is expected that generalized comments on moderation likes/dislikes (e.g. "not enough troll threads get taken down", etc) as well as generalized comments on undesired posting styles/habits (e.g. "too much partisan bashing") of fellow members will occur, just keep it civil and respectful so we can keep the Open Mic thread open and productive.

If the thread degrades into a flamefest or trollfest then it will be locked.

Our goal is to ensure the community's needs are being met, to ensure the rules of engagement are less murky to the members of the community, and to ensure the spirit of the existing posting guidelines (fairness, tolerance, etc) are upheld in a way that is both prudent and realistic.

Consider this thread to be a brainstorming thread, a working meeting of sorts. From it we will distill the productive bits and follow-up with a thread that establishes clearer boundary conditions on acceptable versus unacceptable posting behavior as well as determine the right level of moderator resources that need to be allocated to this venue in the run-up to Nov 6th ;)

You have some users that do nothing but insult others, and are allowed to persist.

Other than that, this forum is an absolute cesspool of faux intellectuals debating about decisions on which they have no bearing in a world in which they have virtually no impact. So it's perfect, it protects the other forums, as it was designed to do.

Straying Off Topic and Personal Attacks should be a Warnable/Vacationable offense.

Would require a level of Moderation that I suspect no one wants to do though.

people making claims without links or without proof of their claims....
Of course we all know you can use the internet to find somebody who backs up your claim no matter how outlandish....
but still it would be nice to have links...even if the link is www.bugbunny.com when discussing news....

describe a personal attack.....
calling somebody`s viewpoint idiotic or asinine is not a personal attack,...its a personal attack on their viewpoint...

You folks do a pretty decent job. I'd like to see less obscene and vulgar language, but I notice my language has been getting worse in these forums lately. I'd like the moderators to be fairer and provide more of a level playing field, but there's a good chance it's just my own confirmation bias. Even though I politically disagree with some of the posters here, there's none I wouldn't buy lunch and a beer for and talk about P&N stuff if I ever ran across them.

Liberals. Enough of their crap already.

But on a more serious note: things work here. Leave it alone.

There is really no need to ever describe someone's statement or viewpoint as idiotic or crazy. Yes, you may believe a statement to be one of those two things (or both), but there is no place in civilized discourse for such a response. Instead, can we not reply by saying something is inaccurate (even grossly so)? Even if you reply to the statement and not the speaker, I don't believe a response of "that is stupid" has any chance of doing anything other than making the value of that discussion plummet.

All the little meme's like "religion of peace" are wasted space and if they are the only thing in a post should receive a warning for wasting everyone's time.

Main beef is some people (like myself) get infracted or banned immediately for something mild. While it SEEMS (from my perspective) that the mods routinely let other members pass on absolutely horrid things. I would not suggest theres any bribery or deliberate favoritism going on here, but perhaps its a subconscious thing.

No names. I have reported plenty of people already.

Oh, and the usual nonsense, putting words into someones mouth, strawman, arguing something that isnt directly related to the topic at hand.

And it seems a LOT of OP's here start an obvious troll thread with seemingly innocent language to avoid Mod wrath. Whereas if someone asks a pointed question and doesnt go out of their way to be politically correct, mods immediately lock it and sometimes punish OP.

I think it should be kept as it is. The mods have done a great job, although it's a shame that they don't accept payment for their services. I use their website without paying AT and I wish I could pay for that. I know they get money from advertisers but then the advertisers don't use the site. At least not like I do.

I have been told to stop reporting people for doing things I received an infraction for doing. I suspect it is caused by a natural viewpoint bias by those who have the stomache to moderate this forum.

That said, there is a moderator forum to post complaints about such things.

Fix the water treatment plant and stop the diversion of sewage from the input pipe to the output pipe and stating that it has been treated

My only objection, from the beginning, has been that there isn't a rule about OP's in threads. I think every thread OP should be required to supply links to a story, website, or some other discussion. Without this rule, the threads always quickly resort to people flinging poo back and forth. Granted some other threads that started with links in the OP do this too but it usually takes a while and there is subject matter for the ranting and raving. Its not just people blindly throwing punches back and forth. Troll threads end up with troll infestations.

I think it's fine as it is. There are some genuinely good discussions around. Others are crap but that's what we deserve.

This. Bring back the rule that there must be a link and/or a commentary of, say, a paragraph. Which in grade school I was taught meant 5 sentences or more. Not that it'll fix everything, but it would help clean things up. Even seemingly valid threads such as "poll: who are you voting for?" quickly turn into partisan hackery that would make a Limbaugh vs Mahr thread look sane.

I agree about commentary on stories linked but I'm not sure every thing should have a link. It would eliminate any free discussion on things in general. Let's be honest link or not most threads turn into pissing contests.

There are certain posters who often call those with different ideologies Nazis, or Communists, or Socialists, or go into psychobabble about how they really hate themselves, etc.

Agreed, hence the "and/or". Even if there's not a link, there should still be standards of length for commentary IMO. Not that I see it making much of a dent, but every thread counts. :p

Where else but P&N can so many logical fallacies be displayed on a daily basis? Things seem to be working just fine when you accept that the more keystrokes you make the more precious time of your life you are wasting. Long winded, well thought out, articulate posts fall on blind eyes. Brevity and quips are all that flavor of the day. Oh, and too many alt accounts... but you are never going to stop those.

We need a list of websites that both the "R"'s and the "D"s accept as unbiased.

I also think there should be free flame retardant suits liberally distributed for contributing members.

Great need for an unbiased Mod in here without an Agenda too.

So many Alt Trolls who kamikaze threads in here.
