OPEN LETTER TO CALIFORNIA BASHERS

America has engaged in some finger wagging lately because California doesn't have enough electricity to meet its needs. The rest of the country (including George W. Bush's energy secretary Spencer Abraham, who wants Californians to suffer through blackouts as justification for drilling for oil in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) seems to be just fine with letting Californians dangle in the breeze without enough power to meet their needs. They laugh at Californians' frivolity.

Well, everybody. Here's how it really is:

California ranks 48th in the nation in power consumed per person.

California grows more than half the nation's fruit, nuts and vegetables. We're keeping them. We need something to eat when the power goes out. We grow 99 percent or more of the nation's almonds, artichokes, dates, figs, kiwi fruit, olives, persimmons, pistachios, prunes, raisins and walnuts. Hope you won't miss them.

California is the nation's number one dairy state. We're keeping our dairy products. We'll need plenty of fresh ones since our refrigerators can't be relied upon. Got milk?

We Californians are gonna keep all our high-tech software in state. Silicon Valley is ours, after all. Without enough electricity, which you're apparently keeping for yourselves, we just plain don't have enough software to spare. We're keeping all our airplanes. California builds a good percentage of the commercial airliners available to fly you people to where you want to go. When yours wear out, you'd better hope Boeing's Washington plant can keep you supplied. There isn't enough electricity here to allow us to export any more planes than we need ourselves.

And while we're at it, we're keeping all our high- tech aerospace stuff, too, like the sophisticated weapons systems that let you sleep at night, not worried you might wake up under the rule of some foreign kook.

Oh, yeah, and if you want to make a long-distance call, remember where the satellite components and tracking systems come from. Maybe you could get back in the habit of writing letters.

Want to see a blockbuster movie this weekend? Come to California. (No, on second thought don't) We make the movies here. Since we'll now have to make them with our own electricity, we're keeping them. Even if we shot them somewhere else, the labs, printing facilities, editing facilities, and sound facilities are all here.

Want some nice domestic wine? We produce over 17 million gallons per year. We'll need all of it to drown our sorrows when we think about the fact that no matter how many California products we export to make the rest of America's lives better, America can't see its way clear to help us out with a little electricity. You can no longer have any of our wine.

You all complain that we don't build enough power plants. Well, you don't grow enough food, write enough software, make enough movies, build enough airplanes and defense systems or make enough wine.

This is your last warning, America. Lighten (us) up before it's too late.

Love, The Californians Welcome to California, you need a passport. Now go home.

Don't worry, I pulled out this section since I think it was over the top:

Keep your disgusting fat white bodies covered and well away from us, please. We don't need your racist, misogynistic, hompophobic, southern politicians. Keep your fascist bible belt conservatism, your crappy auto and steel industries.

I remember when this e-mail was going around. I lived by a police station so I never lost power, but I thought I'd throw it in here. Apparently it's ok to nuke California. We have a GDP of $1.5 trillion dollars and even if you can't see eye to eye with some of the hippies out here, we are one of the main suppliers of your way of life.

Actually yes I do, I live in Wisconsin

Keep it all in state? It will wither and die because that tech NEEDS sold to everyone in the US not just California, morons. Where are you going to fly to anyway?
And while we're at it, we're keeping all our high- tech aerospace stuff, too, like the sophisticated weapons systems that let you sleep at night, not worried you might wake up under the rule of some foreign kook.
say what now?
Oh, yeah, and if you want to make a long-distance call, remember where the satellite components and tracking systems come from. Maybe you could get back in the habit of writing letters.
Because California has lots of sattelites in it?

Good luck shooting them elsewhere, you wont have energy to get out of state, suckers

My favorite wine comes from NY, snobs

You are missing a BIG one. For every dollar that is sent to Washington DC (and then to the other states) CA only gets .79-.81 cents back in federal funding.

And because we are such a big state, that equals tens of billions of dollars.

Um, we are going to need that money back.... with interest.

Let's make california an independent country.
California will be the next coral reef national park once that overdue earthquake finally arrives and knocks it into the ocean. :p

And I agree with quizzelsnatch since I also do not like California's fruit. California's fruit is genetically modified with no taste, is pesticide ridden, and is usually spoiled on the inside.

You should move here and get it fresh like we do.

By the way. They predict that in 200,000 years the San Andreas fault will have slid enough to make parts of South Western California it's own island.

It's a great state, but so is every other state in the friggin country! I don't care if my state has this or that or such and such. WHO THE FVCK CARES?

OP, STFU!

That part is extremely exaggerated. The aerospace industry is spread out all over the country. It's not concentrated in one place. You can argue about other industry being primarily in California, but not aerospace.

Isn't that bigotry? I only count about 8 southern states on that list.

OP, bragging that Cali is #1 in certain fields (dairy) is silly, considering that Cali is probably the #1 consumer of said item. That state is very large, so the numbers will be big. It'd be different if it was a medium sized or smaller state.

You want to be your own country? You think you have problems now? What would happen when you have to pay for internationally delivered electricity? What about the importation of other items that your "country" doesn't produce?

From a canadian point of view:

I've been to a whole bunch of US states. I liked North and South Carolina, Virginia, Northern Florida because the people were generally nice to us. Gave us funny looks when we denied grits, though.

Northern California (Bay Area) Feels like home to me. I love it there. But I can't afford to live there.
