Open cases

My son (14) wants to build his own computer. He likes this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811112287 . I thought about finding an old case and using the mother board tray and any other parts out of it for drive bays etc.

We just tore down a couple of old compaqs but they really don't seem usable. We would mount this all to a plastic shelf with the motherboard on top and the drives mounted on the lower shelf. We would add a decent power supply. I currently have about 5 old PATA drives laying around that we would pick through for the computer, and an video card. the rest would be new parts.

Any thoughts or suggstions

You will need a way to secure the video card, and any other cards that will be used. This may be an issue, since any pulling on the cable could lead to serious problems. If you could find an old case that could be cut to leave the cards slots intact (like that case you linked), that would probably be the best.

You will also need to find suitable buttons for power and reset. These switches just short the two contacts and you should be able to salvage them from old cases.

If you have pets, then get an enclosed computer.

Otherwise, well, yeah, have fun with it. No open containers of liquid near the computer though.
