A open box Gateway GT5056
x2 3800
1 gig
250 Pata drive, could be sata thought mobo supports both
windows media player
DVD 16xrw
Three IEEE-1394

I priced the parts on newegg and ended up near $550 before shipping.
So it seems like a good deal, anyone have anythoughts?

It is a 939 MOBO so I should be able to upgrade to a better x2 in a year or so when they become cheap.
I am looking for a better game player than my 1.8 Ghz p4.
Another option would be a cheap Acer or Emachines Athlon 64 for around $450, would be a better gamer now, but not longer term

It is right here in Florida, was an open box, told me it was display. All the newer X2 3800 are 2gig, not 1 gig of ram.

You can do better, look at the Sunday paper ads for all the chain stores, plenty of HP anf Gateway deals. Also check shop.hp.com.

Dell has been having Core 2 leptop deals for under $700 if you want something portable

I want a gaming machine, and a lap top won't cut it that way.
For an X2 3800 this seems to be the best deal I have seen. Most places seem to be selling them for around $100 more.
Only problem with deal is the 939 motherboard means it is yesterdays tech, plus I doubt I can overclock a Gateway. Anyone know different?

Well to be fair, a case, HD, PSU and DVD-RW can be added easily for pretty cheap. Cables? You gotta be joking if you think you get a lot of special cables that you don't get with your basic mobo. You do get a warranty on the parts and tech support is a joke.

However, you do have a point with the OS and he might need a monitor.

The next cheapest X2 3800 I have seen pre-built is almost a $100 more and that was an "after rebate" deal at Compusa.

I would love to build me own, but after buying all the parts AND addings Windows XP ($80) I end spending more on the same system.
I do have an extra ata drive and cdrom I can fish out of my present computer to lower my "start up" costs for a new machine. I was just wondering if this deal on the Gateway was so good that I should not pass it by.

Prebuilt systems will almost always be cheaper than DIY systems.

But with prebuilt you get

1. Crappy propietary parts that are difficult or impossible to upgrade
2. Zero overclock ability
3. Tons of bloatware loaded by the mfg
4. Usually you only get a revovery disc for the OS, which means it's not usable on anything except the prebuilt box
