You can't "recertify" something as new.

If the drive was not used or sold and sent back to WD, I don't see why WD can't check it out and sell it as "Recertified New". Sounds like an OEM sent them back without using them, no?

It's more likely to be customer returns (RMAs) that were tested and determined to be working within specification.

Here's what the Q&A said ---
These drives are Recertified. On the drives themselves there is a new sticker stuck on by Western Digital that says "Recertified." From the Western Digital Website, here is what Recertified means:

Recertified Products (USA and Canada)

WD recertified products may consist of customer return units and may be repaired. All products are tested and determined to meet WD's stringent quality standards before they are sold as recertified. Please note that some recertified items may have marks, scratches, or other slight signs of wear.

All recertified products carry manufacturer's limited warranty of 6 months.

Be careful, these drives ARE NOT NEW and DO NOT have the normal 5 year warranty. Western Digital only warrants Recertified drives for 6 months
Basically it's refurb job.

Bit OT.. but Fry's B&M has been selling the 74GB gen1 Raptors(SATA1) in the $49 range for a few weeks. They evaporate from stock pretty fast and are not refurbs or re-certified IIRC.

WD 74 gb Raptors might have been the speed demon 4-5 years back, they have seriously fallen behind. A current Caviar Black is not only significantly cheaper per gb, but also faster, cooler and quieter. For that price, you can get a NEW 500-640 gb Caviar Black -- with a full warranty.
