Not a bad deal, but how does it compare to this one? It was posted not too long ago. USB 2.0 is cool and all, but I plan to go with firewire. Plus, what chipset does this one use?

Because he's a thread crapper, not to mention he obviously must have firewire already otherwise why would he bother to bring it up and he must also have one of those new 400mb/s transfer rate hard drives to take advantage of firewires full capabilites :D

Anyways this is a sweet deal for all of us who got those MSI boards with 2.0. As a matter of fact I'm going to buy one right now to go with my new "portable" 120GB WD drive from Dell...yes I'm rubbing everyon's face in my recent good fortunes:p

Settle down guys ;) 400mb/s is only 50MB/s, but you're not likely to get much more if any over that with IDE anyways, except burst transfers...

USB 2.0 is 480Mb/s (60MB/s). The WD1200JB has a supposed 100MB/s buffer to host speed, so that will be limited. In real operation, I suspect the drive's actual sustained throughput wouldn't be limited much if any by the USB bus. At 60MB/s you could fill the 120GB in about 33 minutes...seems good to me :)

<< AC input: 100V - 240V >>

? So can someone explain this to me. Does the enclosure have it's own power supply, to get the 12v dc to the periferal, or what is going on here? I would have figured the periferal would get it's power from the usb cable, but maybe not?

Has anyone here bought from these people? Their prices seem a little too low,to be legit! Also one fact on USB2,it has never come close to firewire speeds, even though it is supposed to be faster.Still a big boost over usb 1.1 however! I have fw and usb2 on all 5 of my systems,so I can confirm the findings of Intels labs!I would like an enclosure with USB 2 and Firewire for my 40x cdrw.Does anyone know of any? Not the USB 1.1/firewire from Geeks.

So which is faster? USB2.0 or FW? Can you post results of sandra on here? THANKS alot. I am sure it will help lots of people to make whether they wanna go usb all the way or use FW.

The enclosure has a built in 12V/5V PSU. This is for 3.5"/5.25 drives (hdd, cdrom, etc). USB is 5V, right? So it wouldn't be able to power the drives.

As for firewire vs. USB, which is more common? I would base my purchase on that.

I no longer have sandra.I do have an external enclosure of each flavor. When I put my Plextor 40x cdrw in the firewire,I burn at 40x and do a cd in 3min 12sec.When I put the same drive in the USB 2 enclosure it burns at a max of 24x and 4 min flat.Same media, same Dell 8200 P4 2200.As for which is more common, that is a difficult choice. The usb can work with the older slower 1.1 standard. Most higher end laptops have firewire,as well as the Audigy equipt systems.I prefer firewire, but I recently had to put software on a Panasonic Toughbook with no cd drive. It did not have firewire,or usb 2.It did have usb 1.1,so I used the usb 2 enclosure. It only copied
at about 6x however. I did buy a second 24x cdrw for the usb 2 unit, but it would be nice to have one unit that I could take on the road with me.I could use it with whatever my clients machine has.

USB 2.0 has the speed advantage over FireWire. USB 2.0 has a top speed of 480Mbs where FireWire is only 400Mbs. Of course, most CD-RW drives will never go this fast.

^ Like you said, that's only "top speed", which is hardly ever reached. Real-world tests are more important than technical specs. Just my opinion :)

I think this is a great deal though! The only reason I wouldn't get it (not a thread crap) is cuz my school lab computers only have FW connections, so I use FW to bring video projects back and forth.

Good find!

Does anyone know of a 2 bay external USB or Firewire enclosure? I'm going to have an external HD and external CDRW and would like to put them both in the same enclosure. I've seen them for SCSI drives, but never USB or Firewire.

It means that the AC adapter (which may or may not be built into it, i.e. could be a wallwart) can take anything from 100v-240v. Its kinda like your electric shaver, same idea. The idea is that if you need to plug it in to power in europe that's 240v, you just buy an adapter that changes the plug, rather than having to mess with an inverter or anything. Most computer power supplies have a little switch on the back to switch from 110 to 220 (hint, don't mess with the switch) so all you have to do when going to another country is change the power cord. I lived in Germany for a year so I had to learn all about this stuff.

I've always kept an eye on this one from Addonics. It comes with a USB2 cable but you can also buy a firewire cable or a PC Card (PCMCIA) cable.

One can find it for ~$84 (with USB2 cable) at Buy.com

However, the web site doesn't tell much about it like max HD size it supports or what chipset is being used.

Are any of you guys familiar with this USB2 enclosure? Is anyone able to comment on it?

Thanks,
