This was OOS for quite a while (prolly all the other people pin-modding), and just came back in stock today (5/18)

I thought this would be pretty hot for anyone with a cheaper motherboard, such as a Dell system, who wants to overclock their system on the cheap. The Core 2 Duo E4300 runs at 1.80Ghz (800Mhz FSB), but with a simple pin mod can be run at 2.40Ghz (since it changes the FSB to 1066Mhz), the same speed as the E6600, but with half the L2 cache.

Pin Mod Link (you do this at your own risk, it will void warranty)

All you need is a Conductive Pen, and this CircuitWriter Pen from RadioShack would do the trick. Only other option is to buy on ebay or some online store (conductive pens are tough to find).

I'm not sure if fingernail polish remover can correct a mistake, so be careful.

They had it in-store for $5.97 plus another 10% off. So you can get it about $.60 cheaper if you want to go to the store to pick it up. $.60 should be more than enough to make up for tax (Tax was: $.33 for me). I took the last one so you would want to call first to see if they have any in stock at your location. 🙂

I got one of these at Walnut Creek Radioshack today and did the pin mod on my E4300 combo that I picked up at Frys on Friday for $99. Worked like a charm, first time. By far the easiest and most stable "overclock" I've ever done.

I'm not a big modder by any means. If I can do it, and do it easily, anyone can.

AFAIK these pens don't work if you're intending to pimod 4300. The only thing that will work is rear window defogger repair paint.

Decent price on the Circuitwriter pen which has many uses.

I'll agree that the copper rear window defogger repair kit is the way to go for a E4300 pin mod. Seems like more people are having success with the copper. Could have something to do with how much you apply to make the connection.

I had a three year old repair kit from Napa (same as Permatex) which I used on my E4300 several weeks ago. Running strong at 1066 FSB and above. If you goof up with the copper paint you can remove it with acetone (nail polish remover).

The Circuitwriter pen is cheaper though. Would like to hear details from those that got the pen to work. More than one layer applied? Drying time?

The pen works !

I used the Radioshack pen on the E4300, and it was very very easy and it worked fine the first time. I have read elsewhere that the pen works fine for most people and it certainly worked for me. I gobbed a bunch of the "ink" outta the pen onto a piece of paper, then used a toothpick to lay it out. I used a magnifying glass to make sure the connection was solid, let it dry, and voila! I only did one layer. It took all of 45 seconds from squeezing the pen to being ready to dry for 30 mins.

Again, if my old hands can do it anyone can.

Thanks for the info ECartman !

I wonder if those reporting failure on the mod were just using the pen to draw the circuit. Regardless, your method works.

My local RS shows they have the pen in stock. I'll be picking one up tomorrow to keep in my tool kit.

Just pick up this from local RS store with 10% off. Running my Fry's E4300 combo @ 2.4Ghz. It's beautiful.
