I swapped out mobos (from slotA to socketA) and my sound stopped working (device cannot start, error code 10 in device manager). I reinstalled the driver and switched pci slots to no avail. I swapped in a different sound card to see if that would help, called MS to reactivate (grr.... i should go back to a pirated corp version if I keeps swapping hardware). The other card produced the same results (both use the same chipset). I switched back to my slotA mobo but sound continued not working. I booted in to safe mode to remove as many drivers as possible - sitll no go 🙁.

If I put my card back in, I'll have to reactivate, but the person at MS said I can get 2 or 3 reactivations over the net before calling again.

My questions: Will driver rollback help? Is there a way to uninstall ALL drivers and get to the same driver setup as the first time I powered on with XP?

It's a stupid question, but are you sure nothing is set to "Mute"?

did you try changing it from PCI slot?

yes and yes.

after formatting, resetting the configuration data again, and reinstalling the drivers it works. go figure.

I know if you removed "Plug nad Play Bios" in Windows 9x all of your drivers would be reinstalled. I am not sure about XP though?

Yes, I know this posting is a day late and a dollar short.
