This happened to me in a different order.

Weeks before I got married, I let my boss know that I was taking a week off to go on my honeymoon. One week later he lays me off as he has to hire someone to fill in for me while I am gone.

He got his though. Jail for tax evasion. and in jail he got beat the fuck up and end up with a scar across his face.

Karma bitch!

how many weeks of unemployment can you get now?

In NY, I believe it's up to 99 weeks, not sure if that is the same everywhere or not.

[EDIT]Oops, that changed, it's only 26-40 weeks now depending on when the claim is submitted, that sucks.

That sucks, OP.

I've been through more lay-offs than most folks here, and they're rarely "convenient."

Hopefully, your prospects are better where you're living than they would be here...we're bouncing at 16%+ unemployment rate...and have been there (or higher) for the past 3-4 years.

Best of luck in your job search. (find a new one before 3/2 and just quit!)

What happens on march 2nd?

edit....nvm...i see what you mean...

depends where you live....in Ma it is something like 85 weeks. however, once you get over 52 weeks, you have to start the whole weekly submission process (you know, like that Sienfield episode). I doubt they would check each person face to face, but i can tell you now that the whole 3 job submission a week thing is actually harder than it sounds.

Dam....what sucks too is that lots of the companies lay people off and still grow. My last company laid around 20 people off, but they hired 50....

Plus you don't need so many people to do the same job. With advances in technology you are able to do more and more with less people.

and this is exactly why capitalism is bullshit. technology eventually will take nearly all of our jobs. even service jobs (has slowly been since the 50's!). no matter what we do or how hard we work, there is no top because machines will always be faster.

we will end up in socialism because there just wont be that much to do. scary really, because if people think WALL-E was just a cg movie, think again!

one of my friends used the opportunity when he got laid off to take a trip to south america and europe for 3 months. He had a blast. He even found another job when he got back.

It sucks...

Still no good news

Before I joined this company I was confident, but now...

What happened?

Do you have a useful skill that you might call an "art" of any kind?

kick starter might-well fund you a few thousand dollars to get a small business off the ground.

You guys need to set aside the individual elitism and pool your resources together. Create a company.

That is what I did. Originally, my business (consulting engineer) was not turning a profit. All my work was free. i was getting unemployment, so it was possible. Now, I am getting contracts. They are not big contracts, but they at least pay more than unemployment.

Hi, I have an MBA with a focus on entrepreneurship, have successfully failed at running two companies and am now doing a doctorate in business. (this is to say I know less than nothing about business, but I'm happy to misdirect you if I can)

If you read this book:

I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding your business ideas.

PM me if you would like my email (same offer stands for anyone here interested in starting a business).

nah man, the best advice I ever got from a successful VP was that failure can be the best thing that can happen...if you learn from it. So, when she interviews people, the first question she always asks is, "How many projects have you failed on"?

Well, I was a manufacturing engineer in some OEM company, my job wasn't that professional, I mean if I need to start my own business.I have to drop off all these experience and go into a totally different field, which I know nothing about it before.

I don't have money to start over again if I fail.
