BTW, how much is that X5 setting you back? Edmunds test the new MDX at $49k and were thorougly impressed.

Honda could take a dump on a plate and Edmunds would rave over the aroma and the choice of nuts.

You could say the same for BMW in ANY car magazine, so what's your point?

I'd say that it's hip to hate BMW nowadays. Bangle this and iDrive that.

Where'd you go, and how was the service? Herb Chambers on Comm. Ave.? Foreign Motors West? BMW Gallery? I might be looking for a CPO E39 540i sooner rather than later.

All my experiences at Herb Chambers have felt vaguely like I was just roofed and, while I wasn't 100% sure I had enough proof for my testimony to hold in court afterwards, the person opposite me was trying to rape me. I was looking for Gordon Gecko in the management office, they were trying so hard to pressure me into closing. Just an odd atmosphere. :)

My Father-In-Law looked at getting an X5 but decided to get the Lexus RX330 instead. It came down to the Lexus being $10k cheaper...even though he has the money.

I have to admit i love the look of the X5, the X3 looks uber gay tho ;)

With that kinda of cash i'd be buying a Landcruiser 100 series turbodiesel personally (you don't get them iirc anyway), but if wasn't doing any real offroad work the X5 would be attractive...

They sold my uncle a brand new corolla for $18k. I think you're right.

Your money though, I'm a huge fan of bimmers. If things pan out the way I'm hoping in the next few years I'll be getting one myself.

i agree... that is, if id ever consider an SUV

Consumer Reports gives many used X5s an average to slightly above average reliability rating on transmissions. The X5 gets far below average reliability ratings on electrical, AC, power equipment, and body hardware. The X5 gets above average ratings on the rest. Overall, the X5 gets an average rating.

So, you expectations of transmission failures don't match hundreds/thousands of other X5 user's experiences in the CR poll. The transmission isn't rated as being excellent either, so there will be the occasional problem.

Is that all X5s or is it broken down by engine? The 4.4l is a powerful engine, much more so than the 3.0

Was it the X5 that couldn't even go up a moderate off road incline according to Top Gear or was that the X3?

That would be all of them combined.
