Ooo very bad man steal Skoorbie credit!

I am a consultant at this client site and I'm around a few other programmers. They have over 100 controls with comboboxes on them that are loaded with thousands of records. One guy yesterday asked if I knew anything about combo boxes and how to speed this up. I said to use less records (really helpful hey?), but thought that since I'm surfing ATOT anyway I'll spend a few moments and see if there is anymore to it.

Well about 5 min later I sent him an email with the way to speed it up and now all of their users can enjoy super-fast combo box loading. Our boss comes in today talking about it and how "so and so has found a way to speed up all our combo boxes with the sendmessage command". This guy heard the boss say that _at least twice_ and I'm right there thinking wtf I told you how to do it!

I don't really care because when it gets down to it I'm still so freaking cool, but still. The guy must know that I know he was trying to steal credit for something I told him how to do 😛

You COULD have said, "Yeah I found that info for him"

What's he going to do, say you didn't?

wtf... I don't see how you people can sit back and let others take credit for your ideas/work.

If he was right there... you should have been asking him in front of the boss all sorts of questions like how he figured it out so he'd slip up and the boss would see he didn't know what he was doing.

I'd at least say SOMETHING... ehh... you guys are too laid back.

Well I get on well with the guy so I didn't feel the need to point it out and the boss likes me fine. I did finish the boss's sentence for him though when he was trying to explain to me how this worked 😉

Privately send a copy of the email to the boss?

edit: btw... love the thread title 🙂

What was the Boss's and your Coworkers reaction?

Well the coworker is in the cubicle next to mine seperated by a wall so I couldn't see his reaction and boss standing between the two cubicles.

Don't get me wrong, I agree you gotta choose your battles. You know the score and so does he. Your time will come, oh yes, your time will come. 😉

well, there's nothing skoorb can do about it now..it's in the past. If this guy is in any position with the higher ups tho...it could mean more consulting work for skoorb tho!

If it helps any, we still love you.

So when you finished the Boss's sentence... ? He just ignored you or was like "uh huh"

I suppose he probably thought that this guy had already explained it to me and that's how I knew, or that I somehow happened to already know it from earlier days I guess *shrug*.

Stab him! :|

Taking credit for someone elses work/idea is amateur. I always make a point to note someone elses work if I use it, and I hope they do the same for me.

This has happened to me a few times. I used to let it slip each time until I realized that I was losing out on short-term benefits. If nothing else, at the very least it is a morale-booster to be recognized. In exteme cases, it can mean a difference in getting plum assignments and maybe even overtime, at which point it becomes all about money and then there is no question of letting it slide!

Nowadays, I half-jokingly point out that I was the one who thought it up. On the other hand, if someone helps me with the smallest thing, I take the trouble to point it out so they'll get due credit. In most cases, it means they'll not be inclined to steal my thunder when the shoe's on the other foot.

My supervisor does that all the time. She'll tell me: "We need to make a power-point class on bio-terrorism". What that really means is that I'll do the work and she'll take the credit. I asked her supervisor about it one time and he told me that's just how it goes, the same thing has happened to him in the past. I've always loved that logic. I once suggested a different way of doing something to a previous supervisor. He told me: "By god we've always done it that way and we're going to continue to do it that way". You should have seen he look on his face when I said, we used to live in caves and wear loincloths. Should we go back to that?
🙂

My take is what goes around comes around. This is one thing I learned not to do since it creates animosity. It is also funny when you see it happen and have the ability to do something about it. An example was someone (A) on my site trying to take credit for something that another person (B) did. The other person never complained since he did it out of his good heart. Well, Person A was trying to "apply" for a job ($20-25/hr) with my website and basically got Person B to do it for him in a mischevious way.

So, I tried to approach person B with a the exact offer I gave Person A and the guy refuses to take money. Can you believe it? I'm trying to pay you to do something you like to do. Last time I checked, pocketing a few extra hundred dollars a week is not too bad. Person A found out and could not say a thing about it since I knew the entire story. Of course, Person A tried to twist it around saying they were partner or some lame excuse.
