Only one speaker in 2.1 system works

I just got a new PC, and with it I purchased the logitech z-2300 2.1 speaker set. My motherboard is the ASUS A8n-SLi wiht onboard realtek AC97 audio. After about a week of use, I decided to plug in my headphones to the speaker jack on the volume/bass control knob, but only recieved sound in the left speaker. I then unplugged them and realized that I was only getting sound out of the left speaker in the z-2300 rig too! I assume this was the case since I got them at first. The speakers are set up as such -

- = connects into

Power - Subwoofer
Left Speaker - Left Speaker input on Subwoofer
Right Speaker - Right Speaker input on Subwoofer
Volume Control - Connector on Subwoofer
Audio Out Cable from Volume Control - Headphones/Line Out Jack on I/O panel

I checked all the connections, I've tried switching the speaker connectors, and plugging the audio out cable into different jacks in the I/O panel, but nothing changed. I've also gone into both the sound/audio devices properties and AC97 control panels, but fiddling there does nothing either. There's only one thing I can think of - for some reason, volume control (the xp accessory) was uninstalled, and I can't find a way to get it back. Maybe the balance was turned all the way to the left, and then once the program disappeared, it remained that way. I doubt this, however, because I never ran volume control while it still existed. Is there anything I could do to troubleshoot or fix this?

Thanks.

Update - I plugged my headphones into the headphone jack on my I/O panel, and only got sound in my left speaker, so it must be a problem with the computer and not the speakers.

Welcome to AT.

Can you get to the volume/balance controls through control panel?

(control panel then Sound and Audio Devices, then Voluem, then Advanced?)

Are you sure the jacks are getting in all the way? I've seen a couple installations where the case interfered with the plug getting in all the way so only 1 channel worked.

Are you sure you're using the correct jack on the motherboard? (The green one usually)

What happens when you fiddle around with the balance controls in the Windows controls?

I'm using the lime green jack, and I checked with both the speaker and motherboard manuals to make sure it was the right one. My balance controls consist of a voume control for the left speaker and a volume control for the right, not the traditional balance slider. Still, increasing the volume on the right does nothing. I also updated my drivers and codecs from realtek, but no difference.

Does the balance control in the windows sound controls do anything?

no - moving the left spkr volume up or down changes the left speaker volume, but the right spkr volume does nothing. I am still unable to find a traditional balace menu due to the loss of my volume control tab.

Well, I dont' know what you did to mess up windows volume control. It might be the problem. I'm not a software expert, maybe there's a way to recover it, but I don't know.

I had the same problem, make sure that you have the speaker's set up set to stero... This worked for me, and if it doesn;t change it to headphones and fiddle around, change back... it worked for me also. I guess now it's working perfectly, make sure you don't use one driver to set it all up, also you'll have to set up the windows xp ones also.

I'm going to format and reinstall windows - hopefully that will fix it. Otherwise, I'll figure its a mobo issue and take it from there. Thanks for the help!

LOL<<LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL, I have the solution LOLOLOLOL..... TURN UP the volume with the controls on the SPEAKER itself, The speakers will only both work once it has been pull up to enough power. I can't believe others than myself didn't no this, but try it. not the volume control on ur computer, the volume controll on ur SPEAKERs, turn them all the way up if u have to. Than turn the actualy volume down on ur computer, it'll balance out, but both speakers will work

yeah - i get a bit of static in the right speaker, but thats all

the speaker config is "2ch speaker" in the realtek control panel

I don't know much about audio, but is it possible that my sound controller is not recognizing the subwoofer and sending the right speaker's sounds to the subwoofer instead? There was no subwoofer shown in the 2ch speaker setup (there was a subwoofer shown in the 8ch setup)?
