Only need to settle on the CPU

Ok, this morning I ordered an ASRock Z77 Extreme 4 from Newegg.ca because Newegg gave a 70CAD gift card with the purchase of this motherboard. Sweet deal!

I then ordered a CoolerMaster 212+ EVO HSF, for a good price, to go with my next CPU.

I already have 8gb of G.skill ARES DDR3-1866 CL9.

Now, when i'll received my gift card i'll order an Ivy Bridge...but which one?

i5 3570K?
or
i7 3770K?

Price/performance ratio I think the 3570K would be a better deal...but I want this upgrade (CPU) to last for at least 3-4 years...while replacing the GPU when needed.

So, i5 or i7?

Mainly Gaming and light multi tasking = 3570k
Gaming heavy multi tasking Rendering encoding = 3770k

3570k. By the time your 3570k is obsolete, your 3770k wouldn't be much to look at either.

And for the price I agree, the 3570K minus 70CAD is a no brainer I guess :p

Well it's mostly gaming and CAD and never at the same time lol.
So the 3570K will be well enough.

So would I. The extra money I would spend on the i7 3770k over the 3570k is almost nothing to me. Also I would feel better having the 2 MB extra cache and the 100 MHz faster clock speed. However, if buying an i7 3770k over an 3570k meant a 1 month or more to recover from the additional cost, then I would opt for the 3570k, but that's just me.

But if you could get the 3770K...would you? :p

It's always a question of what you trade away to get it, or: "What would you willing to live without to get it?"

And personally, after looking up all the benchmarks, the answer is: "Maybe one beer, definitely not two." Since the price difference between 3570k and 3770k is more than the price of two beers, even if extra $80 magically materialized in my hand when purchasing a cpu, I'd just rather use it for something else, like a better GPU or a slightly bigger SSD. Or for some beer.

i7 for sure. I recently came to the conclusion that I've been dinking around with minor price differences on core components like CPU and motherboards. Nothing at all wrong with a 3570K, but in the long term, the $100 delta between the two is meaningless.

I'd swap my 3570K right now for a 3770K if Haswell wasn't right around the corner.

I don't have any hard numbers to back this up, but it *seems* to me that i7's tend to clock a little higher - better bin perhaps?

3770k. If you're keeping it that long, the extra $$$ amounts to a few cents a day extra.

3570k will last 3-4 years as long as you resist the upgrade itch.
It will last lot longer I guess, the computers 6 to 8 years old are still good today for internet and office working, not the hardcore gaming or rendering ofc.

Sounds great! You can always put 8 threads to good use at the Distributed Computing forum. :)

I don't plan to OC for now but will eventually. For the meantime i'd like to use the Turbo clocks...is it simply "activated" in the BIOS?

Bare with me, first time using Intel with turbo thing :p

Thanks for the advices!

These threads always end the same way. Someone wants to get confirmation that buying into the 3770k is the better option.

This thread is a typical example. Every reply says the 3570K. Then the OP starts to let us know that he really wants the 3770K and at the first positive reply (post 14) it's a done deal - 3770K it is.

It's always on and working. So you will get 3.9Ghz in certain circumstances.
