NTFS is a proprietary format. Blame Microsoft.

(Also, HFS+ is a proprietary format. Blame Apple. Vive l' Open Standards)

Third party solutions are reverse-engineered, and haven't always worked super-well. If you can get one (like NTFS-3G + FUSE) to work, well, more power to you.

I still format external drives as FAT32. Heheheh.

I was never able to get FUSE working properly so just I bought ParagonNTFS and called it a day. I've been using the same version of this software on 10.5 through 10.8.

OP, if you plugged hard drive with an HFS+ partition into a Windows machine, it won't even be able to read that partition. At least with OSX, you can get it to read NTFS partitions.

I use hfs explorer on Windows. It's a java program that will let you read and extract files off a HFS drive.

Dang, you should all chill out 🙂

I think those defending Apple would resonate with Marco's sentiments: http://www.marco.org/2013/01/21/anti-apple-anger

I'm not bashing Apple and giving MS a free pass. In fact, take it to mean I rarely use Windows anymore now that I've completed my switch over to OS X and didn't know Windows can't read/write OS X formatted drives natively. I would't know this because I'm dual booting Windows on my Mac and now understand that Apple installed drivers so Windows can read/write to my OS X partition.

Maybe there's good technical reason, or maybe it's just marketing for either OS not being able to write to drives formatted by the other. But since Windows own 80%+ of the market share while Apple's growth is faster than Windows', it's best for users in general if they could both read/write to each other's format.
