No more Pentium E1000?!

Looks like there won't be single core Conroe-based Pentiums. Only :

According to the latest roadmap from Intel, Pentium E2000 is based on native L2 stepping 2MB Conroe core, in which 1MB of the L2 cached is disabled. This family is available from Q307 including E2140 (1.6GHz/1MB L2/800MHz FSB) and E2160 (1.8GHz/1MB L2/800MHz FSB). Enhanced Intel SpeedStep (EIST), Intel 64 (I64) and Execute Disable Bit (XD Bit) are supported like Core 2 Duo. Yet Intel Virtualization (VT), ViiV and vPRO are excluded for separating the market.

I wonder if this 1MB cache is gonna hurt things substantially. Who knows they might even ship a few 1MB version that did not disable the other MB for the lucky few. I do agree with them, dual is the future now, little point in pushing single core tech in the coming year. Esp. with games moving to multi-core support, single will take a big hit in almost every apps coming next year compare to dual cores.

Why would we care? The people who write code for a living are still too lazy to write SMP-enabled code.

Cheap's my middle name. With no single core, I'll settle for a 4x00 series Core 2 Duo sometime next year. I don't feel the need to be a sheep and join all the cool overclockers with their 6x00 series. I'm the uncool kid sitting by himself in the corner with the glasses and with the 2.6GHz socket AM2 Sempron 2800+ that cost $36 retail boxed. 😱

I care because I lost a bet a while ago that most games of 2006 will be SMP coded.

EDIT: Also, the bet included the Dual core CPUs will be mainstream.
