Only booting into safe mode

As of now all I can do is boot into safe mode. This all started with a direct x error I recieved when trying to play COH. I've been running many other recently games fine (doom 3, hl2, everquest 2) but for some reason I was recieving artifacts and errors in COH. After reinstalling drivers etc the problem didn't resolve its self so I thought maybe it was my overclock and I set settings to normal and havn't been able to boot reguarly since, what could have happened? What can I do to fix it? I'm seriously stumped as to what could cause a problem like this. I'm also getting a bad directsound driver problem, error code:88780078.

My setup:
Abit IS7
pentium 4 2.4c
1gig of 3200 ddr (512 x2)
9800 pro

Edit: Forgot to add in that my OS is xp pro.

1 - disable sound in device manager - might even want to remove/uninstall
2 - start - run - type SFC /scannow
reboot and see if that does it.

If not, then run windows cd installation again, and try R to repair installation
If not, then run windows cd installation again, and don't press 'R' but choose the next option to repair/install into present directory
