Only attractive people go to Sylvan, and only seemingly middle-class use cash checking services.

So have you noticed for the Sylvan learning ads that they're all milfs and the families are all attractive, with smart, clean looking kids? I wonder if ugly families never need tutors.

And then the check-cashing services, notice how they are normally average looking people, but well dressed, and even living in nice apartments/houses? In reality I'm sure most people who use these live in a dillapidated dump

You are looking at it all wrong. The nerds (which according to the movies must be unattractive) have much less reason to go to Sylvan. Thus the remaining population who might go there is more attractive than average. Note: yes some nerds do use Sylvan to boost their test score one point, but lets ignore that for this post.

The well-dressed people in nice apartments cannot afford those clothes nor those apartments. They are in debt up to their eyeballs and have figured out that 300% interest loans are the only way to maintain that lifestyle. The low-income people who live like they are low income have enough disposable cash that they don't need check cashing services.

One of the ones now has a young couple and the guy says "The baby came earlier than we expected. Check n go let us buy the things we needed." Hot damn, son, if you can't even buy some diapers maybe you should have splurged on a rubber!

Ain't these people heard of credit cards? :)

Well, in theory, the smart ones tutoring at Sylvan must be nerds, and therefore ugly. But the tutors in the Sylvan ads are all good looking.

That is the funniest part of all of those commercials. Even if you allow for a premature birth, they still had many months to prepare.

Not to mention having a baby seems like one of those things you'd be saving up for. If you're living paycheck to paycheck, maybe you should reconsider kids at this stage in your life.

I can't understand how those check cashing places are legal - according to consumer reports, the APR on the loans is something obscene. Wish I had thought of short-term loans (without the leg-breaking like the mob has been doing for years), they're probably raking in the cash.

There are lots of them around, too, so yeah they are doing alright ! I use the number of them to indicate the relative wealth of an area.

How so? I would think the more CC places would generally indicate a lower relative wealth.

Its the same reason Mcdonalds commercials aren't filled with obese, acne laden children.

One of the wonderful excuses people have when they think something couldn't have been prevented and they don't want to take responsibility.

Don't confuse the TV world with your world.

Actually, the Sylvan ads aren't that far off, the MSF class I taught was in a strip mall with a Sylvan learning center, the parents all drove $30K+ cars and they were all well groomed.

Sylvan is expensive as hell...

The check cashing places are a dump, and the rates they charge are outrageous.

I really don't have any urge to see ugly (or less appealing in comparison) people on television (a form of entertainment - that's what we want to see). If you want ugly people, go outside. :D

What are you talking about? If you're living paycheck to paycheck, then having kids == "Profit!", in terms of now being elgible for greater handouts from the state. Of course that encourages the "lower class" to have more kids, especially ones that they wouldn't otherwise be able to pay for on their own.

I worked at Sylvan for a few years. I was an assistant/teacher/and test administrator. (From when student first come in and get a battery of tests.)

Honestly, from what I remember it was a pretty good bell curve. From Low Income to Upper Class, and not intelligent to very intelligent kids.

Wait... Check cashing services... What? Can't you walk into a bank and go "Give me money" and get held at gunpoint by an armed guard until you realize you forgot to tell them you had a check to cash :p
