plus a plethora of linux software.

this is not a great system, but it is nice in the fact that it pretty much allows anyone to afford a computer.
other than that - i just could not believe you can get a computer that cheap.

makes me cringe at spending $4400 on a p2 450 4 years ago.

There's a review of it in this moth's PCMagazine.. Said it's a decent system.. Good for a entry-level PC, but would be better with a Windows op sys on it..

The p2-450 would still probably beat it hands down in processing power :p

The Duron system they also offer is much much better. I actually seen a PC magazine article where they said the Via C3 runs a bit faster than the Duron. I hope that it was some sort of misprint, but PC magazine generally makes dumb reviews.

Hmmm they are using a two tone Inwin case just like me. I think I am going to get a new case so no one confuses my machine with one of these walmart pc's. Ahh j/k they are smart for using Inwin! They are dirt cheap and very durable.

having a non windows OS is a great idea and the main strength of the system as it helps it remain lowcost
adding windows would nearly double the price heh
Long live open source!!!

Isn't this the Lindows box that all those posting on /. have been about over the last few months?

I went to mmy local walmart and they never heard of this computer or Lindows. I guess I live in a mentally challenged area.

Wasn't this $199 a while back doesn't Lindows have a yearly fee?

The system for $228 is online only, and it actually does not use lindows. It uses Lycoris Desktop/LX - unless i understand wrong this is different from lindows. HERE IS THE LINK

I would also like to note - this computer does not come with a floppy drive - finally moving in the right direction - lets drop this legacy hardware and start moving forward.

I think it's great, not the fastest computer around, but for someone that just wants email, a web browser and maybe an office suite (open office), it should be fantastic.

The Lycoris website has info about the OS, and a direct link to the wal mart purchase site. Never will understand the need to make linux look like XP, but I guess it will work for people wanting to buy this computer. Also mentions that WineX is included, so at least the buyers of the pc can play some games.

I notice you didn't list a video card, and didn't see one on the website either. Doesn't look like it comes with a monitor, so that's going to up the price a bit.

Hey, thanks for the links.
So now we have another Linux based OS?

Anyone notice this Lycoris was located in Redmond Washington?

Also there is a page with other computers based on Duron Athlon and P4 w/ lycoris.

I've used Lycoris before, it's a really nice version of Linux for complete newbies, IMO. It was formerly called Redmond Linux, and I believe the founder of the group is a former Microsoft engineer or something like that.

The interface of Lycoris is just stunning when you consider that it's designed to emulate the look and feel of Windows. It has a theme similar to Windows XP, and everything works great for someone just starting out using Linux. It's the kind of OS you'd feel comfortable giving your mom ;)

I read some of the reviews and it sounds like the best Linux yet.

Are there any other themes rather than the Windows XP bubble gum cartoon look?

Might make a good machine for somebody who just needs web surfing and word processing. Do all Wal Marts carry these?

I think that is an excellent system for a large portion of users. AT forum users often don't think like the average consumer. The average consumer doesn't need the processing power that power users do. They may not play games at all. They may not do much more than use their computer as a way to communicate with friends, do research, or wordprocess. For any of these function, this computer is totally viable. For $230, that's not bad. Also, how can anyone say the computer would be better with Windows? No computer is better off with Windows. Sure, more software support is available, but as long as the functions the user needs are covered, it shouldn't be a problem. It's not like Linux is totally devoid of any software support. One just can't make a viable gaming system with Linux. Just about any SOHO type function is totally accessible with Linux.
