I just got a Toyota Corolla '86 on Monday for $450 CDN, and I knew there were a few things to do with the car (radiator, windshield, brakes, tires), yet I didn't think the cooling problem was as bad as it was. The drive home from the guy I bought the car was only 5 miles, yet when I got home coolant was spewing from the car and I didn't know why.

Later, upon inpecting, the radiator was plugged up and the car got so hot that the fluid was spewing into the overflow container and from there onto the ground. I shudder to think of the abuse that the engine's been taking from being overheated practically every time it's driven.. but maybe that's a testimony to the reliability of those japanese motors?

I picked up another radiator from a junkyard for $60 CDN and now the cooling system works great.

Now... I'm gonna have to do something about those brakes. The pedals pulsate whenever I push on the brakes and a nasty smell comes into the car. I'll wait a while just to make sure that nothing goes kaput on the car first though so I don't waste my money ;)

It's a little ironic, because my cooling system got fixed today, yet my friend who bought a Camaro on the same day just had a pipe burst on him. It's too bad cause his car is pretty nice.. hopefully it won't cost him too much to keep it nice ;)

How bad was the overheat?

If the needle wasn't smashed against the H, it's probably just fine. I'd recommend an oil change though, your oil really takes a beating during overtemp situations.

86 Corolla for $450Cdn? How many kilos? Prolly about time to change the tranny? Our 85 Bonnie's tranny went at about 150,000kms, but me treating it like dirt for the past 50ks prolly didn't help it much either.

The transmission and clutch still feel great, it has 220000km which is 137000mi

It's no GTS :( It's the FWD sedan... but hey it's transportation.. ;)

Eli, when it was overheating I noticed the the needle just barely touched the red when cruising on the highway or just going fast, I'm sure if I had gotten stuck in traffic it would have blown up.

86 corolla is the star car in the anime initial d. Supposedly a real good car for drifting ;)

I know nothing about cars though.

1) a pontiac bonneville is not a toyota corolla in any stretch of the imagination.

2) my 92 bonneville's auto tranny was still going at 270,000 km.

the amount of YACT's you post are disproportionate to the rest of your posts. now we're going to hear about this 17 year old japanese POS for the next 10 months until finally it implodes in a dazzling array of fireworks, after which you will buy an even older econobox.

is this thing carbureted?

Pretty hot... hopefully you didn't damage anything too bad.

My girlfriend's mom's 83 Camry had 218k on it when she got a new car. It had an overheating problem.. the electric fan wasn't working anymore.. So it would only overheat in traffic. Never could figure out where the frayed wire was, and it wasn't a fuse.. So the solution was to bypass the whole thing.. lol..

We installed a switch in the cabin, and hooked the fan directly up to the battery through the switch... Just had to remember to flip the switch whenever you got in... And turn it off when you got out. :D

That's a perfect fix as long as you used duct tape at some point.:p

Nice, I wish I knew more about cars, alas another one of life's regrets. I guess I'll always have to pay to get stuff fixed.

Yep! I used duct tape to tape and route the wires running from the battery to the cabin down so they wouldn't flop around.. LOL...

It was a great little car, probably worth less than Ultima's car though. The frame was bent from some prior accident, and the left front and right rear tires wore on their outside/inside edges. She had to replace the tires about once every 4 months.. LOL..

Other than that, it still ran fine... It's probably a 4x4' box by now though.

Lotsa memories.. Driving back and forth with her between my girlfriends house before she moved down here with us..

We put 16,000 miles on it during the 7 months before my girlfriend moved down here.. Heh.

Heh. I'm not gonna beat on it like I did the Shadow.. no redlining in this car.. not that I know where the redline is anyway since there's no tach. I'll let it rev a bit high when going on the highway but that's it.. don't want snapped timing belts, blown headgaskets, pistons with holes in them or any of the other crap that happened to me with the Shadow :)
