I dont quite get it, why have an X1950 for 2000 dollars, does it come with special drivers to allow direct programming for stream processing?

That's what you're paying $1600 extra for. The card uses the same exact r580 gpu as other x1900 cards, only it comes with 1GB of memory. That was my speculation of the main reason Nv is also trying to enter this market with its g80 cards.

"Close to the metal" - Amd's version of Cuda, to put in simple terms. It's a driver which exposes a lower level of access to the HW than the regular DX9 and OpenGL drivers.
