"Only 12 guys in the world could do it" or "Maybe 10 guys in the world could make that shot"

Cliffhanger in regards to climbing a certain cliff one of the guys says maybe 12 guys in the world can do it.

Then in Lethal Weapon mel gibson says something like maybe 10 guys in the world could have made that shot.

Where do these guys get these numbers? I'll admit it sounds pretty cool, but do they know all the best climbers in the world? Perhaps. But knowing all the best marksmen? That seems a little unlikely.

These are the things I ponder as I lay awake at night. In fact that leads to a joke:

"I am a dyslexic agnostic insomniac - I lie awake at night wondering if there is a dog."

"I wonder is there more rape at the North Pole or the Equator. These are the things I think of when I'm home alone and the power goes out."

they actually do track sharp shooters...

Well the US would, but could the US know about the top marksmen in Russia or Brazil or Denmark?

From the writer. Shane Black, who wrote Lethal Weapon, thought it would sound cool.

If there was a sniper that's THAT badass...they'd know. =)

Snipers are kept on record with confirmed kills, etc.
