I dunno about wine much, but Binny's has the best beer selection of any store I've ever been to.

They do lots of Wine tastings, and I do know that when I go to their B&M Stores ... they have aisle upon aisle of wine, and a huge cellar. (their giant walk in humador has an awesome cigar selection. Their spirit selection is enough to make most liquor stores cry.)
I try not to go there, because every time I do, I wind up buying way more booze than I should ever have in my posession. (I've spent upwards of $300 on several ocassions at that place.)

I usually shop at the Schaumburg Binny's.
Though if I'm near my Mothers house, I'll sometimes stop at the Buffalo Grove one.
Also, the Des Plaines one is only about 2 miles from where I work.
The Sams near me has a horrible selection of beers (no Hoegaarden, no St Bernardus, no Duvel, no Leffe, no Orval, no Ommegang, no Westmalle, no Rogue, etc) and their Spirit selection isn't very good either. They don't even have Captain Morgan's Private stock or Bombay Saphire! They do have a good Tequilla selection at the one by me though ... maybe it's just that way because the town I live in is over 70% Latin American, most of which are Mexican ...

WineBid.com is great for those rare bottles. I've bought a dozen or so from there over the years, and I've never had a problem.
I would also recommend Wine Searcher for pricing and retailer information, and Cellar Tracker for legitimate tasting notes from consumers.
I've never had a problem with any of these vendors, but I still prefer to shop locally for a lot of reasons.

What do you mean by extensive? Extensive and expensive? 😀 Are you wanting '82 Bordeaux? Futures? Those rare bottles from garagiste (e.g. Loring)?
If you're looking for something specific, it's often better to just go to the winery directly. Most wineries allow you to buy direct, but some states limit this (although some will still ship to you).
Give us a better idea of what you mean and we can probably offer more recommendations. It really depends on what you're looking for.

i really like rieslings. meulenhoff, loosen, maximin grunehauser. though except for loosen, the other 2 are rather hard to find. i also like hermann wiemer, and even though he's domestic, his wines are hard to find online.
i also love sherry, and i usually like lustau, preferrably oloroso.
i dont think i can afford to get any bordeaux, since i just checked and the '05 mouton is 500+ (could be worse though). but i do love a bordeaux though, preferrably from the left bank since i am just starting to warm up to merlot.

Most of those online vendors should offer a reasonable selection of German Rieslings. As I always say when people bring up Riesling, you should really try out some of the Alsatian style. They're mostly dry, so if you're used to halbtrocken or anything sweeter, you might find it a little unusual.
I love Sherry, but Madeira is actually my favorite. I don't drink very much of it though, but I love the intense red cherry, butterscotch, caramel, etc. flavors and aroma.
You don't have to buy Mouton to enjoy Bordeaux; in fact, I'd say don't. It's simply not worth it. There's a lot of decent Bordeaux out there from lesser known chateau. You can also get the second-labels of some major chateau, and these are usually from older vines. Les Forts de Latour is the best known example, a second-label of Latour.
Alternatively, you could seek out right-bank Bordeaux. This would include St. Emilion and Pomerol, both Merlot-producing regions. Pomerol is harder to get (home to the famous Petrus--good luck getting a bottle of that 🙂), but there are some fantastic Grand Cru St. Emilion wines for much cheaper.
It's a start 🙂 It seems like any of the vendors mentioned in this thread should be sufficient though. I wouldn't limit yourself to any specific labels. Find a varietal you like, the region you like and go from there. Most regions have a very similar style for the wines (there are exceptions when you get into the more exceptional wines), so different producers are likely to yield similar results. I say that very generally of course...
