Online Software Purchasing ... OEM / DSP / Retail

I cannot find any discussion regarding the risks or rewards of purchasing software online from companies offering DSP and OEM versions versus Retail. I'm surely not the only one to be getting these daily emails linking to these cheap software sites with a very strange URL. Not being typically skeptical my trust in these is rather low.

Anybody have experience, knowledge of these sites and what they offer? I don't need the box, manual, tech support, etc. anyway, but don't want to buy illegal software either.

I don't know if I am allowed to post the URL links for examples and so to avoid being censored and beaten by a moderator I'll ask permission first... ;-)

Cheers...

I am of the opinion that if something sounds to good to be true, it probably is.

The downloads may not be clean; they could be warezed/cracks.

The COA may not exist or may be a copy.

If you were to try it; by all cases use a method that if it turns out to be illegit; you can get your $$ back via a chargeback of some type without major effort on your end.

Places that offer 25-30% off may be volume resellers.

Anything more of a discount should raise a red flag. Check with the OEM about such sites.

A lot of these sites resell Volume License Copies of programs
according to Microsoft as I asked them once about a particular
site & they had already known about it and what they sell.

Basically, most software makers, will not give you support
for products purchased thru a non authorized resller .. Also,
some of those sites, might steal or abuse your credit card.

Check with the software company first about any site like that.
Also check the BBB listing for where they say they are at.

I see software sold without the COA, just the serial # and/or unlock code because it's OEM ... is this a problem? It's not inherently illegal right?

Even if it is OEM it should come with a COA from the company
especially Microsoft ... some other companies do not use the
COA, then you have to rely on other methods, such as Hologram
CD as proof it is not a fake

As stated above; best to check with the manufacturer if the site is legit.

With trashy vendors, I'd be concerned not only about being sold counterfeit licenses (or no licenses at all), but also what they're going to do with my credit-card info later :Q
