How does an online signature work? I've filled out some paperwork online before where it said "you agree that by typing your name below, it counts as your signature" or something silly like that. Does anyone know if there is actually any legallity to it?

I am thinking about adding a section on my website where they have to electronically sign the page and date it of which it will just input into a MYSQL table showing that they did it. Anything I should know before starting out on a page like that?

That's how I've done my student loan papers through citibank, so I assume it's legit.

It's called an e-signature, not sure how well it works in court. Forget trying to get anything like a medical record with it, they want a full signature faxed or sent in. For everyday use it's pretty binding, heck, my bank uses them as well as many other "important" sites.

The only way to navigate past that page to the content is by checking the box that you agree to the terms in order to proceed. I'm not a lawyer but I'm sure it will stand up in court.

Since an HTML text box can be used to both collect a person's name and an e-signature, it was explained to me that it has to be made very clear and obvious that the e-signature is just that, and not a field gathering a name.
