Online sales tax quandry

I was wondering whether or not I should have been charged CA sales tax on a petco.com order (i'm a CA resident, package shipped to CA). The tracking number says the package origins was NY, and therefore purchased from NY? Has anyone encountered this with online vendors that also run national B&Ms?

AFAIK, if a store has any business presence in your state, they will charge your state's sales tax.
