I recently purchased my first DSLR. I want to get the most I can out of the camera. Is there any good websites that provide tips and tools that would be worthwhile?

Can't recommend a site but I will say this.

I barely used my DSLR after I first got it. Eventually I found out about prime lenses, and picked up a 50mm. This really helped me get into it and opened the gateway to everything else.

So, don't cheat yourself and use the kit lens. You can pick up a 50mm prime lens for cheap before you decide what other lenses you want to spend your money on. Also, it really seems to simplify things and helps you understand photography better.

What is a prime lens? What exactly can be achieved with them?

Prime lenses refer to a lens with a fixed focal length. They generally also have very large apertures, designated by small f number, f/1.8 for instance.

Great for low light shooting, and also allow for a very narrow depth of field. IE, focus point is sharp but most everything else is blurred out (referred to as bokeh).

I use a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 that very very rarely leaves my D90.
