how does AT figure out if you're online or offline?
i mean i'm sure its not whether you hit "logout" or something, right?

does it ping your last known IP address or what?

It probally has to do with the last time period you sent/recieved data to/from the server, after a couple minutes i suppose, you are "logged out", unless you manually log out.

I think it uses cookies? 😕 I'm not sure I understand the technicality, though. 😕 I would like a response from an expert too. 😛

lol!

plus, how does AT know if your browser is "on" or "off"

Everytime you view a page, it records the time you visited, and updates the database to say you are online. After a set amount of time (3-5 minutes, depends on the forum software), if you have not viewed a page, it will update the database to say you are offline.
