Online or brick m mortar?

Not sure where this question fits in the forum so any mod is welcome to move this post! 🙂

Anyone have a preference where to buy their parts?

I went to Fry's and they had everything I need except HDD and a Radeon 6950

Went to Best Buy and they didn't have any vid cards, but they had a selection of HDD that would suffice.

With Fry's or BB I can just walk in the store and get a replacement if something is DOA. With New Egg it's a wait to ship it and receive a new one.

Just curious to know how others view this....

I prefer buying parts at the store but unfortunately that's not always convenient and gas is 4.00 $ a gallon so I'm not sure how much your really saving by driving to the store.

If the price isint to high I recommend going to you local store because if its close to the online price you'll be paying the same with shipping anyway.
So basically I order online most of the time just because I live in an area where these stores are very far to drive to, but if there the same price as the online store than i will make the trip.

i buy parts all over the place. i work about a mile from a microcenter. since they started having good deals i've bought from there. i've been buying from fry's since 2002. my last 4 or 5 processors and motherboards have come from there, though they don't offer the specials they used to.

i used to buy from best buy and compusa back in the late 90s/early 00s when they'd have huge sales (actual good black friday, washington's birthday, etc.).

as for online, most of it has been from newegg. amazon has started to get in on the action lately.

Online shopping for me, most of the time. I pick and choose, though. With online, I try to find free shipping and no sales tax (I live in Texas, where our local sales tax rate is 8.25%) Newegg mostly, but their prices haven't been the best since Black Friday (or is that just me?) so I shop around a bit more, now.

I really like MC, but it's a 30 minute drive so I have to weigh what I'm buying vs what I can hopefully find it for locally (BestBuy, etc.) Also, don't discount the office supply places like Staples, OfficeMax, et al. I have business accounts set up with them and regularly get 10-20% off coupons in the mail. I'm also lucky to have a pretty big computer parts place about 40 minutes away in Addison (Altex) that has one of Everything, I think.

The last 2 times I was in Fry's were not good experiences... I won't ever set foot in there again.

Not many good stores in the midwest.

No good stores around here. However, for TV's and Monitor sometimes I have purchased from a local Best Buy. Most Items are just cheaper online. In the past sometimes a store will have an Item like a Hard Drive or DVD drive on same and it might be better to at least look at local sales fliers.

With the exception of Wal-mart, Best Buy, Office Depot, Office Max, there is not much in the way of a good electronic stores around here. Sometimes I have used a store like Radio Shack for cables or something like that in a hurry.

If you have only one crucial computer that without it your are out of business, buy from B&M.

Otherwise, it goes by the whatever is less expensive.

If waiting few days is Not functional problem but rather a personal issue, then the money would be better spend on some therapy. :hmm: - 😀 - 😱 - ^_^ - :sneaky:

Update to Micro Center. OK I did locate a Microcenter in St Louis, MO (Brentwood). I looked at the price for a CPU, 2500K, of $179.99. This looks like a great deal till you pay the tax and then it comes to $196.96. If I purchased just the processor that might cover the price of gas to drive there and back. So in the long run, If I purchased an entire computer in parts by the time I paid the tax it might cost more, and the selection is less. All I would really save is a little time.

I am going almost all local for my new build. I have a Frys, MicroCenter and TigerDirect/CompUSA outlet all within 30 minutes of me, so I can get almost everything I need from them. I am leaning towards getting a new case if i can finesse the rest of my budget a little, but that has to be done online, no one else has it (Fractal Arc Midi).

The savings from getting the CPU and mobo at MC will offset any small difference in price that the GPU might have online and then i get all the parts at the same time and am building the system within an hour of purchase.
