Make sure you're properly trained in the use of firearms :)

I have ordered a good bit of stuff from Gunbroker. It's an online auction, so caveat emptor.

I've never been burned there, but I'm sure it could happen.

anyone have any suggestion on a weapon?

i'm in jersey btw. so it's like a pain in the butt to begin with..

i have a permit to purchase rifle&shotguns. i'm in the process of getting a permit for handguns also. I'm sure i'll get it because i'm pretty clean.

stuck on what to get...

handgun?
rifle - something i'm already an expert at. (if i do get it, ar-15 is the only weapon i'll get)
shotgun - big and bulky but packs a punch (cheap too. remington 870 police/military for me)

The CZ pistols are excellent for the money as are the Rugers (even if they are ugly).

Glocks are cost effective and very reilable also.

If you just want something for home defense and are not looking for a weapon to carry, just get a 12 gauge pump shotgun. Every criminal out there is familiar with the sound of that pump, it's the gates of hell opening up.

Size of bore.

12 being larger than 20.

You were in the army but you don't know what the gauge is on guns?
