online gaming on school network

live just off campus at university in an apartment building that the university owns and runs. The apartment came with free internet(which uses the school's lan) When i try to play cs: source or HL2 i get pings of like 2000 to all servers. Is there anything that can be done?
The connection is really fast, i can generally download at like ~100-500k/sec
