Online Game Ethics?

Ok, I just got really PO'd at a bunch of guys on an ET server this morning. They were pissed at ME for playing the way I thought I was supposed to...

I understand things like not camping in front of a spawn point. Pretty obvious. (And even THAT gets debated on occasion) But: What about guarding a choke point?

I forget the map name, but it's the one with the long concrete tunnel. I climbed the tower in front of it with a panzerfaust (as an allied soldier) to keep the axis from coming through the tunnel, and give my teammates a chance to get into the tunnel themselves. That's kinda why that tower was put there, I'm sure.

These guys (including my "teammates") started razzing me. I'm like WTF? I'm doing my job!

Needless to say I bailed off that server. But my question is: Did the ethics change? This isn't deathmatch. It's a semi-strategy game where covering an area is important. Or did I miss something?

You have to realize two things.

1) Your enemies are pissed off because you have this thing called "Intelligence" which allows you to kick their asses wholeheartedly.
2) Your teammates are pissed off because said "Intelligence" allows you to surpass their scores.

IMO, there is Nothin wrong with camping with the panzerfaust. Its a game and you were playing to win.

I just hate those asses who use aimbots and/or wallhacks on online games. Thank goodness for Punkbuster.

You were right. They're assclowns. This is exactly why I don't play online games and restrict myself to the occasional LAN event with a few friends crowding their computers into the basement.

Thanks guys. I was beginning to wonder....

Having a family, I rarely get a chance to play. So here I finally get a coupla hours to myself and I run into these winnars.

Waiting for my Unreal2 to come from a purchase on FS/FT. I like online stuff, but sometimes I just want to get immersed in a single player game... Maybe I just need to buy HW2. 😀 Oh, wait... I have to let my wife get over my buying this 17" LCD first. Sigh...

I don't mind baiting and camping. I do mind blocking (by teammates), hacking, and nade spamming.

"back in the day" of Quake II CTF it was common to take up positions and either put the spank on the enemy approaching your base or helping your teammates by clearing a path for them. Why anyone on your team would complain about making their job easier is beyond my reckoning. I guess you just got to find a more mature server.

I think with the proliferation of so many FPS online games you have a lot of tools that don't know shizzite about ettiquette, strategy, or honor anymore.

Read my posts in this thread. I rarely get to play, and that's why I thought I might have missed some change in the "rules". I *DO* have a real life. So I play maybe a couple times a month.
