Online casino asking for my DL???

So I tried to play online blackjack at sportfanatik.com and won 30 bucks from them. I, however, get an email from them saying that they need me to fax them a copy of my driver's license because they are doing a random audit before they can send me out my check. Is this legit? I wondering this because I know they probably have my credit card number on file since that was the only way I could buy their virtual chips. Should I be worried about identity theft in this situation if I do fax them my driver's license since they are located outside the US?

I would be extremely concern about this, and wouldnt do it... it's only $30 that u won anyways, so dont risk it... sounds like a scam...

I don't even care about the 30 bucks, but I already deposited 20 bucks into my account with them. The only way for me to get my 20 bucks back is to have them mail me the check, which they claim requires my drivers license.

*note to self: never, ever gamble online again!

It's them locating outside of US that worries me... this means they probably aren't restricted by US laws, and as a result you're not protected...

I personally would just forget about the $20, just pretend you lost it all during gambling... just not worth the risks...

That sounds really strange. I can understand the need for identity verification if the amount is significant but $30 is so bogus.

with the cc number and DL number, they can get you into some serious [credit] problems. I would very closely look at their site policy, and if it states nothing of the like about giving you DL, then report it for fraud investigation. Who knows, someone may have hacked into their client database, stole your email, and made a fake email request looking like it came from the actual company.

I'm pretty sure for proper identity theft they need your social security number, which may be why they're asking for a license. Its crap like this -- and the off-chance I'll lose it -- that I get my license without my social security number on it.

If it is a casino inside the US, they are needing your DL to verify you are not gambling in an illegal state. If' it's offshore, hard telling. I'd swallow the $20 loss and not mess with online gaming unless you are in a legal state and on an established site.

Online gambling is illegal in the USA, obviously they(or you) don't care about the law.

Do you often get New York confused with the US?

The laws in question are US laws, not NY laws.

"nonetheless violates U.S. law "- quote from article.

That article is also from 4 years ago

Edit: Most articles I have seen say that they are trying to ban internet gambling, but haven't been successful.

that's because "most articles" you find on google are from proponents of gambling.

you find the same thing searching for legalizing dope, but that doesn't mean dope is legal.

I haven't seen any articles saying dope is legal, and that they are working to ban it, whereas I have seen several articles stating that there was legislature in congress that has been working toward banning online gambling, but it hasn't passed.

online gambling sites BASED in the US are illegal... if you live in the US you can gamble online legally but it is a grey area and may not be like that forever
