online but no 2 computer connection icon in task bar to show it...

Go to the properties of the network connection in the network control panel and check the box that says show icon when connected.
 
My Computer -> Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Right click your connection -> Properties -> check the Show Icon in notification area when connected...

This is assuming that you're on broadband...?

Should be there even if he's on a modem. I always had one back in the 56k days.
