Online backup options - price, performance, security

Does your business perform backups online? If so, what kind of connections were available to you, what level of security did it offer, and is it more cost effective than conventional backup methods?

nobody here works for a company that makes use of online backups? or information too confidential to discuss? I wonder how popular is online backup.....

I can say we dont do Online backups where i am, why spend the cash for that when i have tape drives all over the place 🙂
I think you would find that individuals might like this type of option, putting their photos and such on a drive so they can save it...
but for large comapnies the security, uptime and access to the data are big concerns...

When you say online backup, are you referring to "across the Internet" backup? In which case the answer is no. If not, yes, we use a very large tape silo/loader thingy and back up many of our servers across the (our private) network. Much more efficient than sending someone around to switch tapes on each of the servers. BTW, it requires a dedicate 100Tx NIC, so obviously it plain old wouldn't work across our ISPs, even with our T3 connections.

Yes, I'm referring through the public internet. One of the local company here is considering doing just that, they say it offers four hundred-something bit encryption.
